Once a year there seems to be a curious gathering of hundreds of frogs in this secret garden around the Victorian fountain. It is an extraordinary sight. So I combined this phenomena with a twist of the famous fairy tale, posing the question of which frog the Princess should kiss, given the tantalising gifts before her.

My tribute to Henry Trevor, a Victorian businessman whose passion in gardening led to his generosity in building and sharing this most enchanting garden with the people of Norwich and beyond.

Born inThailand, the third generation of Chinese immigrants, and now living in Norwich,Cherie was greatly influenced by her mother’s love of Chinese folktales as a child, and it was she who took Cherie to see Chinese Opera performances at a young age. The bold make-up and extravagant costumes, especially the jewelled helmets with pheasant feathers, as well as the stylized acrobatic movements, had deeply intrigued and fascinated Cherie. Opera performers trained from around 7 years of age, starting with acrobatics. All roles were restricted to males until 1906. “This print was made for my first open studio, celebrating Chinese New Year 2018 in Norwich. I love dragons, both Chinese and English. Dragon Hall is the perfect building for my set scene with its beautiful medieval features and its history of merchant trading with the outside world. The Chinese dragon is a spiritual and cultural symbol that represents prosperity and good luck. It was also a symbol for many Chinese emperors in the past.  My mother told me that girls cannot ride dragons, and that I should draw a boy riding the dragon instead! And so here's the print, my 21st century tale of a girl riding a Chinese dragon, embarking on adventures from China, arriving at Dragon Hall in Norwich.

Every Christmas I take my children to Maddermarket Theatre where we thoroughly enjoy the little magical experiences together. So I wanted to draw something that reminded me of it. Early this year I've found this captivating old photograph of Pottergate 7 Church House East side, taken by George Plunkett in 1935. The little alley between the church and the old Tudor building shown in the photo is still the access  path to Maddermarket Theatrethese days. I fell in love with this lamp post (in the photo below) which didn’t endure time and so incorporated it into this art work. There are also other details of the past that I’ve added in this print: the vague figures of four statues that used to perch on top of St John Madder Market church’s tower and the Twelfth Night programme, which was the actual show at Madder Market in December 1940.

Old lamp posts and telephone boxes are beautiful inventions that seem to sit in transition between the past and present. It's lovely to see them still standing along the side streets in England. My interest in street furniture sprung from my love for children's books: the old lamp post landmarked the kingdom of Narnia after Little Lucy went through the wardrobe and the telephone box's appearance in Harry Potter. At the back of St Peter Mancroft church facing Norwich City Market stood an old telephone box next to a traditional cast iron lamp post. This was the perfect spot I was looking for and I hope I've brought them to life in my print by adding a touch of magic and a little story around it.
